Xin 心, a fundamental ideogram in Buddhist literature in general and Zen teaching in particular, means “spirit” as much as “heart”. The word spirit (spiritus, pneuma) defines the vital energy or breath that animates all beings. Is the mind a biological entity with a genetic memory? There is the waking state and the sleeping state. Conscious, the mind seeks to survive. Unconscious, it seeks to understand through dreaming. When awake, the mind studies and models reality as it sees fit. It is hostage to an internal debate fueled by past experiences. The intention of the Unconscious combines with the attention of the conscious mind to impact the order of things. The origins of the Unconscious stand as the last frontier. While the brain is a physical reality, in which each mental process has a physical basis, inside the mind there is a moving picture of images related to the collective Unconscious. Environment and culture go hand in hand with the biological evolution of the body and the brain while the Self is the transcendent entity.
